Al-Shabab Ambushes and Kills 57 Ethiopian Soldiers In Somalia

(Radio Shabelle) — Ethiopian forces under the framework of African Union Mission (AMISOM) have engaged Al-Shabaab fighters in fierce fighting at a remote area near Burhakaba town on Friday.

Heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters have ambushed a convoy of Ethiopian troops traveling along Baidoa-Burhakaba road which prompted hours of fighting between the sides.

According to locals, the fighting took place this morning in an area which lies about 15km West of the town.

Two Ethiopian military trucks have reportedly been destroyed after they overran Improved Explosive devices (IEDs) buried on the road.

Both AMISOM and Ethiopian commanders have not yet commented on the incident and its casualties.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab through its affiliate online media claimed to have killed a number of Ethiopian soldiers and destroyed military vehicles.

“We have attacked the Ethiopian troops near Burhakaba town. Our fighters killed Ethiopian soldiers and destroyed the number of their military vehicles,” reads a statement posted.

Ethiopia was among the latest troop-contributing countries to the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

An advance team of 100 uniformed personnel arrived in Somalia in 2014 while the other three battalion-strong contingents deployed soon after.

Over 4000 Ethiopian uniformed personnel are now operating in Somalia under the framework of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

57 UN-backed soldiers killed in Somalia attack – Al Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia, January 18, 2019 (allgalgaduud) – The al Qaeda inspired group, Al Shabaab has claimed to have carried out bomb and gun attack on UN-backed African Union peacekeepers’ armored personal carrier in Somalia.

The group says it killed 57 soldiers from Ethiopian contingent in roadside bomb explosion followed by an ambush attack near Burhakaba town about 164km away from Mogadishu.

It says its fighters had also burned down 7 armored vehicles during Friday’s attack.

There was no immediate comment from African Union mission in Somalia over the claims.

The group has been fighting to topple the weak-western backed government based in Mogadishu for more than ten years in Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked group in Somalia has also claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack on Dusit hotel complex in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, leaving dozens dead.

The group calls Nairobi attack as ‘in retaliation for US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel
