Taken from the book (with negligible modifications)
“From Dictatorship to Democracy” – Author: Gene Sharp

DANGERS of NEGOTIATION From Dictatorship to Democracy was a pamphlet, printed and distributed by Dr Gene Sharp and based on his study, over a period of forty years, on non-violent methods of demonstration. Now in its fourth edition, it was originally handed out by the Albert Einstein Institution, and although never actively promoted, to date it has been translated into thirty-one languages. This astonishing book travelled as a photocopied pamphlet from Burma to Indonesia, Serbia and most recently Egypt, Tunisia and Syria, with dissent in China also reported. Surreptitiously handed out amongst youth uprisings the world over – how the ‘how-to’ guide came about and its role in the recent Arab uprisings is an extraordinary tale. Once read you’ll find yourself urging others to read it and indeed want to gift it.

“Dictatorship is a brutal system of governance. In a bid to stop perpetuated torture, intimidation, extra judicial killings, ethnic cleansing and extreme violation of human rights of all kinds, the oppressed masses may be approached for a  mediation between the dictator and the victimized masses.

Negotiating with a dictator has many dangerous traps.

These are narrated as depicted hereunder:

  • It would be naïve to believe that dictators will negotiate at any time. A dictators’ peace is often no more than the peace of the prison or the grave. Hitler often called for peace, by which he meant submission to his will.
  • Do not forget that the dictator will always have an upper hand in that the state machinery apparatus composed of the entire military, the judicial system, monetary resources, etc. are at its disposal.
  • Therefore, the oppressed masses must be very careful when they accept the idea of negotiation, because dictators may induce the oppressed to cease their political resistance while the violence of the dictators continue unabated.
  • Negotiation should only be carried out when the power of the dictator is completely destroyed, and the dictator is seeking an exit passage.
  • Whatever promises are offered by a dictator in any negotiated settlement, no one should ever forget that the dictator may promise anything to secure submission from the oppressed masses, and then violate those same agreements.
  • Therefore, resistance and no negotiation should continue until the dictatorship rule has completely crumpled. This is the most powerful means for the oppressed masses fighting for freedom.”

Qarree and Qeerroo!

“Jaarsolii arraara jetee olliif gad fiigdu iraa ofeegadhaa!”

  1. Thank you, Beekumaa!

We hope that the great Oromo people, qeerroo and qarree take careful note of this brief but very essential reminder! The naftagna system must be convincingly defeated, for qeerroo and qarree in particular and the Oromo people in general, to sit down and negotiate with the neo-naftagna regime. Oromo, qarree and qeerroo: You have been deceived by the naftagna and gantuu and galtuu individuals on several occasions, exposing yourselves to looming existential threats. Act in unison from every corners of Oromia and free yourselves from the inferior anti-Oromo enemies. Unlike the 19th and 20th centuries which kept you in untold repressions, the 21st century must ascertain your freedom and dignity as a great nation!

Let me finish my comments by repeating my usual quotes and slogans.

The sky is not the limit to what the great Oromo people, qeerroo and qarree can achieve if they understand their power and act in unison!

    And remember:
“In politics, being deceived is no excuse”!
“No man can ride on the back of a man unless it is bent”!

    Truth and justice shall prevail!
    Oromia shall be free!

  2. Talk is cheap. Action speaks louder than words. The great visionary leader Meles Zenawi didn’t spend too much emphasis on the GERD negotiations with Egypt and Sudan but instead took actions building the military budget and securing military weapons to protect Ethiopia from foreign aggression. TPLF got many educated highly skilled military leaders and disciplined fighters as seen in the military parade held in Mekele recently. Abiy rather than wasting time holding talks again and again with Egypt and Sudan , facilitated by different moderators for no avail , he should negotiate with TPLF about the Tigray election controversy , at a time when Tigray’s election controversy is boiling it will be a suicide for the Ethiopian government to participate in a GERD negotiation brokered by Eritrea.

The timing of when Egypt and Sudan chose to withdraw from AU brokered GERD negotiation shows they are seting up for the federal government of Ethiopia to go on negotiate at the Eritrea brokered GERD negotiation creating anger and frustration in Tigray against Abiy Ahmed for letting Eritrea involve in such sensitive regional / national security matter which will inturn weaken Ethiopia’s military muscle because TPLF military will further boycott serving the Abiy Ahmed’s federal government which is exactly what Egypt and Sudan want. Egypt and Sudan know the military science scholars are concentrated in Tigray . Lemma , ABA Dulla , Abiy and the Oromiya Liyu Hayil … are not enough unless TPLF is siding with them, the Amara scholars were broken at the “Amara Coup De Tat” , if TPLF is against Abiy then it would be a walk in the park for Egypt and Sudan so Abiy Ahmed should carefully take his next steps , he should not jump into Eritrea brokered GERD negotiation. He might as well get into Arab League brokered GERD negotiation rather than risking Tigray’s assistance in this time of Tigray’s election controversy by stepping into Eritrea brokered GERD negotiation.
